Obesity has been a growing global epidemic in recent years, with the obesity rate increasing more than 3-fold in the last four decades. This trend is also evident in Israel, which is among the top 10 countries in the obesity rate.

Morbid obesity is a manifestation of extreme excess weight that causes increased morbidity and mortality.

The patient referred by a family doctor to the clinic for the treatment of obesity should make an appointment through the hospital's general appointment phone service. At the first visit, it is necessary to have a doctor's referral that includes a detailed medical history, weight, height, and BMI. The doctor reviews the documents and decides on the tests necessary before a surgical solution is offered, following the Ministry of Health criteria.

After the patient completes all the tests, he needs to make a new appointment at the hospital's general appointment phone service.

The doctor examines the results and decides if additional counseling is needed.

Once all the tests are finished and completed, the doctor refers the patient to the Ministry of Health committee for a final answer regarding the possibility of surgical treatment. The committee takes place in the hospital's outpatient clinics. The committee includes a doctor, a social worker, and a nutritionist. If necessary, consultants from other fields are summoned.

At the committee, the patient is questioned. According to his condition, the committee decides whether to approve a bariatric surgery. (link to bariatric surgery)

The patient receives a summary with a recommendation from the committee and he can send it to his HMO to receive a financial authorization letter.
